Since time immemorial, the landscape of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel has constantly evolved. Why and how have the combined actions of nature and man shaped this coastal strip subject to the action of exceptionally large tides? To answer this question, it is necessary to recall the geological heritage of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and then reconstruct the history of the successive human activities that have taken place in this unique natural setting. This lecture focuses on the traces left by these successive developments, such as the exploitation of salt in the Dol marshes during the Gallo-Roman period, the settlement of monks as builders on Mont Saint-Michel in the Middle Ages, the numerous fishing activities offshore and on the foreshore, the cultivation of oysters and then mussels, and finally the preservation of the maritime character of Mont Saint-Michel.
